THE CHARITY AND THE SAVIOR
In a very antique village, there was a rich man, but very kind. This man visited poor people everyday, always offering food, assistance or another thing they need. In his life, he won a lot of money from family’s fortune, what proportionate a very comfortable material life.
Always he visited the people, he came for them. If someone asked bread, he ordered bread; if someone asked blanket, he ordered blanket; if someone asked shelter, he looked for a warm and safe place. Everything that someone asked, he didn’t stop since he resolved the problem.
People saw his effort and admired his dedication. They thought that a rich man like him didn’t mind with the poor, wish only use its fortune with itself. In his village, everyone told the story of the good rich, distant to be the famous rich of the bible.
One day, the man got sick and died. Since he arrived the sky, he was received by an angel, which looked him with some preoccupation.
The rich man was happy, because he believed that his destiny was the sky. Then, the man said:
– Hi! You should be an angel of the Lord. I want to enter the sky, with Jesus and the other saints.
The angel, with sad in the eyes, said:
– Yeah, you did many good things during your life, and, with no doubt, accumulated many merits, but I still can’t enter in the sky. You will need to take some time in the Purgatory.
The man became frustrated. He would never think that after lot of good practices he would still have to spend time in the Purgatory. Nothing seemed to make sense. Then, he asked the angel:
– But, how is that possible? During all my life I helped the needed, them who suffered and who was in bad conditions. Why can’t I enter directly in the sky?
The angel answered:
– You know the answer, but to stay clear to you… When you helped the people, you always treated them as poor. You wanted to give them everything because you didn’t believe in their potential to care on their own. You thought you were better. Like you were superior and they were inferior. You thought that you needed to take care of them as a savior. But every person have the capacity to change its life, some just need help, so we don’t have to take their cross. Spite of your good actions, in your heart you judge yourself better than the others, believing your goodness made this to you. So, you should stay in Purgatory to decrease your proud.
